HASCOMBE FOUNTAIN UPDATE

Since being instructed by Waverley, following direction from the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), to shut off the fountain’s water supply, the Parish Council has been working with Waverley to identify a way to restore it.

The DWI has updated its requirements, and warning signage is no longer considered sufficient to protect public health. While it was hoped the water could remain available during this process, it was not possible to ensure that signage would remain in place, and the parish council was therefore instructed that the supply be turned off.

Two potential options are currently being considered:

  • installing a structure to prevent the collection of water; or
  • preferably, implementing measures to ensure the water meets drinking water standards.

In order to satisfy the DWI, an initial series of three water quality tests is required, each approximately three weeks apart. These tests can only be undertaken when the spring is at its lowest flow, typically from September onwards. Testing must be carried out under controlled conditions by an accredited laboratory and will assess over 100 potential contaminants. The cost is approximately £700 per test.

The Parish Council will consider at its May meeting whether to allocate funds from reserves to cover this initial testing.

We are also seeking advice from a specialist consultant on potential solutions, including the installation of a UV filtration system and other remedial measures to improve water quality.

If the initial tests are successful, the frequency and scope of ongoing testing will depend on factors such as flow volume and usage. Further guidance on these requirements is being sought.

We recognise that this process is slow and frustrating, and we are exploring all options to restore the water supply as quickly as possible. However, if a physical structure is pursued, Listed Building Consent will be required, which is likely to extend the timescale.
